Moop rating for Anat's Love Camp in 2016. In the image to the right is the moop rating for Anat's Love Camp for 2016.  A yellow rating isn't that bad for a camp of 40,000 sq ft.  I don't think that Playa Restoration will keep notes on what moop was found for a yellow rating.  I think that The Love Camp will be able to get placement next year regardless of the yellow rating.  Still, I think we need to do better next year to get a green rating.  We need more volunteers to stay until Tuesday to help strike and moop the camp.
Moop rating for Anat's Love Camp in 2015. Campers please note that The Love Camp takes Leave No Trace very seriously.  In 2015, ALC received a yellow/green/and RED MOOP rating.  The following list are items that were found by Playa Restoration in 2015:
  1. Red beads. Broken white plastic stuff. Twigs. Stringy glittery thing.
  2. Nail, woven basket bit, plastic broken stuff, sequins. Safety pins. Cigarette butts, screws.
  3. Evaporation Pond grey water spot.

Our placer, Happy, says that "Last year [2015], for the first time ever, the space inside BRC had more moop than limits allowed by the BLM.  The only reason we passed inspection is the playa outside BRC had less moop than the limits allowed and on average we passed.  We *must* do a better job of leaving no trace if we want to continue coming back to the playa."  I repeat what Happy said: *We* must do a better job of leaving no trace!  Clearly we need to step up our efforts to leave no trace and we must be absolutely committed to achieving a completely green Moop rating at the 2016 burn.  To that end, we will take the following actions to improve and perfect our LNT action plan:
  1. Refer all camp members to the LNT policy and action plan on our website TheLoveCamp.org and require all camp members to individually acknowledge understanding of, and commitment to, that plan;
  2. We will construct a secondary containment around the United Site Services grey water collection tank to protect the playa from any accidental spills. This secondary containment will consist of a minimum 12mil thick waterproof liner that will be taped to and extend out from the grey water tank at least 3 feet in all directions and has a continuous side wall 6 inches high around the entire perimeter;
  3. Our camp map this year includes far less congestion (see attached image of camp plan) to make it much easier to sweep the camp for Moop on a daily basis;
  4. We will inform all camp members of the types of Moop found in our camp in 2015 (items like beads and sequins) and discourage campers from bringing items that easily become Moop;
  5. At 10am each day, prior to breakfast, we will conduct an all camp line sweep for Moop. Each day, this all camp effort will also include reminders of actions we can take at all times to contain Moop and to LNT.
  6. We have a team of no less than 15 people who will remain as long as necessary after all vehicles and structures are removed from our camp site to do a detailed final Moop sweep. This team will remain on site until all Moop issues are fully resolved. We will conduct this sweep in a shoulder to shoulder grid pattern with a visual line walk, followed by metal detector and magnetic roller, followed by detailed raking to uncover any hidden Moop. We will document this process with video and pictures;
  7. Should we discover any Moop issue of which we are uncertain of how to best resolve, we will contact a member of playa restoration for expert advice.
  8. All of these steps will be incorporated into, and used in conjunction with, BMORG policies and recommendations for LNT.
  9. We are committed to achieving an all Green rating this year and pledge to achieve an all Green rating.
  10. The only reason that we were given placement in 2016 was because we submitted this LNT plan to our placer, Happy, and we must abide by it and get a green rating or we might not get placement in 2017.

Leave No Trace Plan and Pledge

Leave No Trace is a cornerstone of the Burning Man ethos and one of our Ten Principles.

Leaving No Trace starts before you head to the event.  LNT peaks as you depart the event.  Please think about the Seven Principles and Practices of LNT before, during and after the event.

Additional LNT Pledge Links:

·      Guidelines for line sweeps

·      Windblown Trash

As we prepare for Burning Man, we will: *Mandatory reading.

·      Practice the 5 R's: Rethink what you bring, Reduce trash when packing, Reuse, Recycle, Restore and Respect.

·      Make a written plan or detailed strategy for Leaving NO Trace. Your LNT crew should be different from your set-up crew. Hold people accountable within your camp.

·      Make arrangements to have everything picked up before the last camper departs. Leaving things behind is MOOP and will affect your standing with the Placement Team.

During Burning Man, our camp will: *Mandatory reading.

·      Clean as you go, and never let it hit the ground!

·      Adopt the principles and practices of Leave No Trace at Burning Man.

·      Acculturate all camp members about minimizing our impact on the playa, learn about the Fairy Shrimp and how to protect them too.

·      Conserve energy, use renewable energy sources and minimize waste.

·      Collect, reduce and properly dispose of grey and black water. (e.g. we will bring extra buckets to address any leaks.) Grey and black water is MOOP and of interest to the BLM and the Placement team. Report spills and emergencies immediately.

·      Use or creatively use discarded materials for all the components of our camp structure and decorations, so that our camp is sustainable year after year.

As we depart the playa, our camp will: *Mandatory reading.

·      Bring tools (rakes, magnetic rakes, brooms, MOOP sticks, etc) to clean and pick up every last nail and wood shard that dropped on the playa surface. We will leave our space and our surrounding spaces better than we found them.

·      Follow the guidelines for line sweeps performing required multiple sweeps of our camp before leaving BRC. (One sweep is not enough. Do as many passes as necessary: the strength of the line sweep is in the number of people and passes.)

·      Designate a LNT MOOP team within your camp. They will document all stages of your clean up and remain on playa if you are having any materials picked up. Anything left unattended in an empty camp is considered MOOP.

·      Secure all vehicles' loads to prevent windblown trash on the highway and in neighboring communities.
